The Lighthouse Academy – Primary School in Embu

The Lighthouse Academy is a private school at Mutunduri township, along the Embu–Meru highway in Embu County. It was founded in 1998 by two local teachers, a science teacher and a mathematics and biology teacher, who wanted to bring a different style of teaching to their home town.

The first class of five pupils met in a small house at Mutunduri with just two teachers. More than two decades later, the school has grown to well over 500 learners and about 50 staff.

Children can join at any stage from kindergarten, at three to four years old, through to Grade 6, and boarding is available. The early years classes sit in the quietest part of the school, with space for play and exploration as well as classroom learning. The school aims to raise children with integrity and Christian character, and has set up e-learning structures to support the new curriculum.
