Job Description/Requirements Faculty Member - Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC)
Job Summary:
The Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC) is seeking to hire a faculty member who will play a pivotal role in nurturing the next generation of journalists, media leaders, and communication professionals in the East Africa Region. The primary focus of this position is to provide support, teach, and share knowledge with students enrolled in various academic programs offered by GSMC, including the Executive Masters in Media Leadership and Innovation (EMMLI), Masters of Arts in Digital Journalism (MADJ), and an upcoming program in Strategic Communications. In addition to being a media scholar, the faculty member should possess a comprehensive understanding of trends in the media and communication industry, as well as practical expertise in the application of different forms of digital media.
Responsibilities:
Teach courses across the GSMC academic programs, including EMMLI, MADJ, and Strategic Communications, and conduct training in professional development courses.
Collaborate with colleagues at AKU to develop online content that supports the teaching of academic and professional development courses.
Assess and evaluate students' performance through examinations and other assessment parameters in accordance with university guidelines.
Provide guidance and coaching to students on course-related matters, career path planning, thesis development, and project guidance.
Contribute to the development of new curriculum and review existing curricula.
Demonstrate leadership and subject matter expertise in journalism, digital media, media leadership, and communications.
Actively pursue research funding by writing proposals, engaging in grant applications, and hosting research conventions. Requirements:
Possess a PhD in a relevant discipline, such as Journalism or Media and Communication, from a recognized university.
Have 3-5 years of teaching experience at the university level, with experience working with graduate students being essential.
Proficient in blended teaching methods, both online and in-person.
Demonstrate a strong research and/or practice portfolio.
Show achievement in academic delivery, course content development, curriculum coordination, and program management.
Ability to work independently.
Comfortable working in a multicultural environment.
Evidence of leadership experience will be an added advantage.
