Kakamega Women Telecentre Group is a group (CBO) among other groups in the Republic of Kenya in East Africa registered by the Ministry of Gender and Social Services, Registration Number KAK/C/DGSS/WG/78/2012.
The founder having been brought up and grown up in rural areas prompted the desire to help the poor women, girls and children who are vulnerable in the circumstances they live in. Rural dwellers have it difficult to access quality education as a human right. She also served in the capacity of a director of SME in the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the Kakamega County.
Most of the time the founder rendered her administrative services in the mission hospitals and secondary schools in this rural areas, occasionally I saw women and girls selling vegetables in the markets and abusing their lives by giving their bodies (sex) to men for exchange of money to get their daily bread.
The reasons were that they did not have money to buy food for their children/siblings at their homes, Families in rural areas do not have either enough or no financial resources to keep their children in school and a great number do not attend school or drop out of School at a tender age.
KWTO mandate is to address such issues as they are a hindrance to development and they encourage immoral behaviour that end up increasing HIV/AIDS in the area. on seeing the pathetic state of women and girls who dropped out of school, most of them becoming young mothers, househelps, and others just idle themselves engaging in sexual businesses to earn a living.
Due to this, poverty has taken charge and the problem of many of them being engaged in evil behaviours as a means of getting money to sustain themselves. I therefore had to sit down and think for a way of uplifting them. I came up with an idea of starting this centre out of my own savings in the year 2010 and registered it in the year 2012.
