This job is for a position that requires the candidate to work with the Dean of Residential Life to develop and manage the school's swimming program. The ideal candidate should have 1-3 years of experience working with teenagers in a similar position and possess basic refereeing skills, Swimming Life Saver Certification, and coaching certifications.
The key responsibilities for this role include creating a vision for the swimming program, overseeing the in-house and regional swimming relationships, and creating new and supporting existing partnering by reaching out to schools and other relevant places to seek friendlies and other joint events. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring appropriate preparation and management of all competitions and matches, developing a strong school team to represent the school in competitions, and developing a training program for all training sessions in accordance with school guidelines.
The candidate will be required to coach and instruct swimmers individually or as a group regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport. They will also be required to monitor the academic performance of the players, provide pastoral care and support to students, and ensure simple first aid procedures are done to injured students during sporting activities. The candidate will be expected to provide consistent rewards and/ or consequences for student behavior.
In addition to coaching swimming, the candidate may be required to coach multiple sports, such as basketball and football, and contribute to the development of enrichment and residential experiences for students. The candidate will also be responsible for observing, assessing, and recording students' performance, giving appropriate feedback, and maintaining records of pupils' progress and development for the school leadership and parents.
The ideal candidate should have a relevant degree in Physical Education or Sports/ Recreational Science, with a postgraduate diploma in Sports/ Recreational Science being considered. They should possess effective coaching techniques and skills, have adequate knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport, and be able to communicate fluently- verbally and in writing in English.
The candidate should be knowledgeable in a variety of sports and athletic programs, with a proven track record of implementing successful athletic programs being highly desirable. They should have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to build relationships with stakeholders. The candidate should be flexible and open to change, proactive in identifying issues, and able to find appropriate solutions. The candidate should also have a desire to further develop their leadership skills and apply them to transform the lives of African youth.
