Avocats Sans Frontières (ASF) is an international non-governmental organisation that works towards promoting access to justice, upholding human rights and fighting against injustice in countries where human rights are threatened. With offices in various countries, ASF plans to open two new offices in 2023, with general coordination being done from the Brussels office.
ASF is currently looking for a Programme Manager to coordinate and implement the ASF programme "Unlocking civil society voices for sustainable development” in Kenya. The position is based in Nairobi, with regular travel to Isiolo and Mombasa counties. The Programme Manager will be responsible for overall coordination and implementation of the project, including the activities of local partners. The Programme Manager will report to the Regional Director and will be responsible for ensuring that the project adheres to internal frameworks and that all documentation is archived and maintained appropriately.
The ideal candidate should have an advanced university degree in law or social sciences and a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible work experience in the area of human rights, governance and/or criminal justice. Experience in the management and coordination of programs/projects in an area relevant to human rights is also required, as well as work experience in establishing partnerships with civil society and grassroots organisations.
Other desirable qualifications include work experience in legal practice, provision of legal advice and legal representation, as well as work experience in human rights documentation or human rights research. Knowledge of current human rights issues in Kenya is required, with expertise in one or more of the following thematic areas: civic space and civil liberties, natural resources governance, migration, the prevention of violent extremism, and pre-trial detention processes.
The ideal candidate should also possess several soft skills, such as political and contextual analysis, drafting of position papers and projects, networking and fostering collaborative professional exchanges, design and operationalisation of an advocacy strategy, public speaking, animation of (inter)national and remote teams, and sharing ASF's values, including commitment, integrity, justice, collaboration, and sustainable management.
