The company is implementing a 2-year project funded by the Water Sector Trust Fund (WSTF) under SWASAP project to implement activities in the Kalokol area, Turkana Central Sub- County. The project goal is to increase community resilience and adaptation to climate change through sustainable, peaceful use of natural resources, including improved access to water and sanitation services in Turkana County. The project will enhance integrated water resources management supporting 785 households, increase access to sustainable sanitation service for 900 households through CLTS and 2,500 learners in 3 public institutions, increase access to sustainable water services for 950 households, strengthen governance and management of available water resources, and improve incomes for 400 men and women through alternative livelihoods diversification initiatives.
Practical Action is looking for a Project Assistant-WASH with the primary responsibility for the design, implementation, follow-up, and evaluation of hygiene promotion and CLTS activities in Kalokol area in Turkana central sub-county. The candidate should provide necessary support to the team to implement all activities of WASH projects. The position is a Fixed-term contract (One year) and reports to the Area Coordinator - North Rift. The candidate should be prepared to travel frequently within the geographic scope of the project.
The Project Assistant-WASH will contribute to Practical Action's strategic business planning process, specifically the Climate and Resilience Change Ambitions. The candidate will represent Practical Action in the project area to local government, local communities, NGOs, and other actors when requested to do so. They will participate in local coordination/networking meetings as required and support documenting lessons learned from the project and disseminate the same within Practical Action and externally through different mediums. The candidate will develop and maintain professional links with development agencies, government bodies, county governments, technical and economic specialists, universities, and other professional institutions required by the project. They will support fundraising initiatives for Practical Action in the Climate and Resilience Change Ambition and work collaboratively and effectively with partners for learning and adoption of innovative, gender-responsive, and inclusive interventions to improve project delivery.
The Project Assistant-WASH will work with the WASH team to develop and evaluate methodologies for promoting sanitation such as CLTS (community-led total sanitation) or development of WASH facilities, e.g., VIP latrines construction. They will design, plan, and follow-up of hygiene promotion activities such as training of trainers on hygiene promotion (for community volunteers, WASH committee members, health workers), provide technical support on hygiene promotion to the community volunteers, WASH committee members, and health workers, and develop a culture-sensitive IEC material for hygiene promotion activities. The candidate will provide necessary support to the project team through designing, planning, liaising, archiving, implementing, and following-up the detailed implementation work plan for all activities of WASH projects to achieve the projects' objective on time. They will ensure community mobilization in all field-related to water, hygiene, and sanitation, consider budget planning and
