The Director of Development position is open for a business consulting firm that aids entrepreneurs in developing the skills, resources, and networks to grow their businesses. They also provide capital directly to clients to support micro and small businesses to gain skills and access to finance. The Director of Development will report directly to the CEO and be based in East Africa (Kigali, Nairobi, or Addis offices).
The Director of Development is responsible for leading fundraising activities, growing the donor-base, and institutionalizing the fundraising department. The client currently has an annual operating budget of $13M with rapid growth planned for the years ahead. The Director of Development will need to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to raise $70M USD in the next 5 years in partnership with the leadership team and Board of Directors.
The Director of Development will also mentor and grow a team of development professionals to identify and cultivate relationships with potential donors, including foundations, corporations, government agencies, and individual donors. They will create and implement fundraising campaigns and oversee the management of the organization's donor management systems. Additionally, they will coordinate with other internal departments, including finance, MEL, and Communications, to ensure compliance with donor expectations and promote the organization's impact to stakeholders in compelling ways.
Qualifications for the Director of Development position include a Bachelor's degree with 7+ years of related experience in fundraising. The candidate should also have a proven track record of meeting multi-million annual fundraising goals through a comprehensive and multi-pronged strategic fundraising plan. They must be proficient with donor management systems and have impeccable integrity and discretion when working with high-net worth individuals. The Director of Development should also have deep relationships and understanding of the philanthropic and social enterprise sectors in Africa, be personable, confident, and have integrity to engage donors to support the organization's work. Experience managing and developing a team and overseeing department budgets are also essential qualifications. Strong analytical skills, with the ability to think strategically and develop effective fundraising strategies, are required.
