Description
Tsavo East National Park is Kenya's largest national park, a vast semi-arid wilderness of open plains, acacia scrub and volcanic country best known for its dust-red elephants. Established in April 1948, it covers about 13,747 km² in Taita Taveta County and, together with Tsavo West, forms the wider Tsavo Conservation Area.
The Galana River and the Yatta Plateau, often described as the world's longest lava flow, shape the scenery. Popular stops include Mudanda Rock, Aruba Dam, Lugard's Falls and areas known for maneless lions. The park also protects the critically endangered hirola antelope and has recorded more than 500 bird species. Dark skies make it good for night photography.
Visitors drive in through Voi, Manyani, Bachuma or Mtito Andei gates along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, or Sala Gate from Malindi. Voi and Miasenyi SGR stations and several airstrips are close by. Gates open from 6 AM to 6 PM. Entry fees and online payment are on the KWS Tsavo East National Park page.
