Description

Tsavo West National Park is Kenya's second-largest national park, covering about 9,065 km² of volcanic hills, lava fields and savannah in Taita Taveta County. The Nairobi-Mombasa highway and railway separate it from Tsavo East, and together the two parks form the wider Tsavo Conservation Area.

The park's best-known sight is Mzima Springs, where water filtered through the Chyulu lava rises into clear pools used by hippos and crocodiles. Visitors also explore the Shetani lava flow and caves, the Poacher's Lookout and Roaring Rocks viewpoints, and Lake Jipe on the Tanzania border. Tsavo West has a large rhino sanctuary, the Big Five and more than 600 recorded bird species, and its history includes the man-eaters of Tsavo and First World War battle sites.

The main entrance is Mtito Andei Gate, about 240 km from Nairobi, with other gates at Chyulu, Tsavo River, Lake Jipe, Maktau and Ziwani. Gates open from 6 AM to 6 PM. Fees and bookings are on the KWS Tsavo West National Park page.
