Description

Shimba Hills National Reserve is a block of coastal rainforest and grassland in Kwale County, about 30 km south-west of Mombasa. It is the only place in Kenya where the rare sable antelope is found, and herds of forest elephants move through its woodland and open glades.

The reserve sits on a plateau that catches sea breezes, so it feels cooler than the beaches below. Viewpoints look out over the coast and the Indian Ocean, and a forest trail leads down to Sheldrick Falls, a popular walk with a pool at the bottom. Shimba Hills is also rich in plants, butterflies and birds, and it links to the Mwaluganje elephant sanctuary to the north.

The reserve is an easy day trip from Diani, Tiwi and Mombasa. KWS has the Sable Bandas and the Makadara campsites inside, and Shimba Hills Lodge offers private accommodation. Gates open from 6 AM to 6 PM. Fees and bookings are on the KWS Shimba Hills National Reserve page.
