Description
Central Island National Park protects a volcanic island near the middle of Lake Turkana, the world's largest permanent desert lake. Together with Sibiloi and South Island, it forms the Lake Turkana National Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site in remote northern Kenya.
The island was built by three volcanoes, and several craters have joined to form three crater lakes known as Crocodile, Flamingo and Tilapia lakes. It is one of the most important breeding grounds in the world for Nile crocodiles, which gives it the local name Chooro, or crocodile island. Central Island is also an Important Bird Area and a stopover for migratory birds from Europe between March and May, and sport fishing for Nile perch takes place in the surrounding waters.
The island is reached by boat, usually from the western shore near Lodwar or Eliye Springs. KWS runs the Chooro public campsite, and private camps and lodges are found along the lakeshore. Fees and visit details are on the KWS Central Island National Park page.
