Description
Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site is a national monument and small museum on the eastern edge of Nakuru town, about 4 km from the CBD and a short way off the Nairobi–Nakuru highway. Managed by the National Museums of Kenya, it sits on a rocky lava ridge named after the rock hyraxes that once lived there in large numbers, and it gives wide views towards Lake Nakuru.
The site was first noticed in the 1920s and excavated in the decades that followed, including work by Mary Leakey. Visitors can walk among stone enclosures and habitation hollows linked to early pastoralist communities, Neolithic burial mounds, a hilltop lookout known as the hill fort, and rocks carved with bao game boards. A gallery covers archaeology, Rift Valley material culture and local natural history.
The site is open every day, including public holidays, and welcomes school groups, birdwatchers and families. An entry fee applies, so check current rates on the National Museums of Kenya website before you visit.
