Description
Saiwa Swamp National Park is Kenya's smallest national park, a quiet wetland reserve about 22 km from Kitale town on the road to Kapenguria. From Kipsaina junction a 5 km murram road leads to Saiwa Gate, the only entrance, and Kitale airstrip lies roughly 27 km away.
The park was set aside to protect the rare, semi-aquatic sitatunga antelope, which lives among the reeds and bulrushes. Other residents include the De Brazza's monkey, and the swamp is an Important Bird Area with more than 370 recorded species, including grey crowned cranes. Raised timber boardwalks, tree hides and labelled forest trails let visitors explore the swamp and riverine forest on foot.
Saiwa suits birdwatchers, walkers, students and small groups looking for a calm day out. Accommodation includes KWS options and a public campsite. The park is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service, and gates open from 6 AM to 6 PM. Rates and entry payment are on the KWS Saiwa Swamp National Park page.
