Description

Sibiloi National Park lies on the north-eastern shore of Lake Turkana in Marsabit County, one of the most remote parts of Kenya. It was gazetted in 1973 to protect the globally important fossil and archaeological sites around Koobi Fora, where finds of early humans have earned the area the name cradle of humankind. It is part of the Lake Turkana National Parks World Heritage Site.

The park's dry plains and volcanic hills hold a petrified forest about seven million years old, as well as fossil beds and displays at Koobi Fora. Wildlife includes Grevy's zebras, Beisa oryx, topi, gerenuk, striped hyenas and many crocodiles along the lakeshore, and the area is an Important Bird Area and Man and Biosphere Reserve.

Getting there takes planning: visitors usually fly in by charter or drive through Marsabit or North Horr with a reliable four-wheel-drive vehicle. KWS runs the Alia Bay guest house and a public campsite. Fees and details are on the KWS Sibiloi National Park page.
