Description

Marsabit National Park covers a forested volcanic mountain that rises like an island from the deserts of northern Kenya, right next to Marsabit town. The mountain catches mist and rain, so its slopes are covered in dense forest that stands out against the dry plains below.

The park's craters, known locally as gofs, hold several lakes. The best known is Lake Paradise, a beautiful crater lake that has been used as a film location and attracts many birds. Wildlife includes elephants, greater kudu, Grevy's zebras, reticulated giraffes, buffalo and leopards, and the forest is good for walks and birdwatching. Nearby, visitors can see traditional singing wells and visit the Marsabit Cultural Museum, which tells the story of the area's 14 communities.

Marsabit is reached by a tarmac road from Isiolo or by air. KWS has campsites in the park, and lodges and guest houses are found in Marsabit town. Gates open from 6 AM to 6 PM. Fees are on the KWS Marsabit National Park page.
