Description
AMREF Flying Doctors is Africa's leading air ambulance and medical evacuation service, based at Wilson Airport in Nairobi. It was founded in 1957 by three surgeons who began flying to remote parts of East Africa to treat patients, and it remains a social enterprise of Amref Health Africa, with income supporting health programmes across the continent.
The service operates a fleet of dedicated air ambulance jets and turboprops staffed by flight doctors and nurses, carrying out emergency evacuations from safari camps, rural hospitals and accident scenes, as well as hospital-to-hospital transfers within Africa and to Europe, India and the Middle East. Its 24-hour emergency centre coordinates every mission.
Travellers and residents can buy Maisha evacuation cover, which pays for an emergency flight if they are seriously hurt or ill in East Africa. Companies and tour operators can also arrange group cover. Emergency lines and membership options are on the AMREF Flying Doctors website.
