Description

Kenya Railways Corporation is the state agency that owns and runs Kenya's railway network, with its headquarters on Workshop Road near Nairobi Railway Station. It oversees both the historic metre-gauge railway, first built in the 1890s, and the Standard Gauge Railway between Mombasa, Nairobi and Naivasha that operates the Madaraka Express.

For travellers, Kenya Railways runs Nairobi commuter trains linking the city centre with suburbs such as Syokimau, Embakasi, Ruiru, Kikuyu and Limuru, as well as the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport link. Revived metre-gauge services connect Nairobi with Kisumu and Nanyuki, giving scenic and affordable trips through the Rift Valley and central highlands. The corporation also handles freight, rail infrastructure development and heritage assets including the Nairobi Railway Museum.

Timetables, ticketing and customer service details are published on the Kenya Railways website.
