Description
Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on Hospital Road in Upper Hill, Nairobi, is Kenya's largest public referral and teaching hospital. It opened in 1901 as the Native Civil Hospital, was renamed King George VI Hospital in 1952 and took its present name after independence, becoming a state corporation in 1987. KNH works closely with the University of Nairobi and the Kenya Medical Training College to train doctors, nurses and other health workers.
The hospital has about 50 wards, 22 outpatient clinics, 24 operating theatres and an Accident and Emergency department that runs around the clock. Its services cover surgery, internal medicine, paediatrics, cardiology, cancer treatment, kidney care, mental health, diabetes care, laboratory and imaging diagnostics, and pharmacy. The Prime Care Centre offers private care within the hospital, and the KNH School of Nursing runs specialised courses.
Most patients are seen on referral from other facilities. For clinic schedules, referrals and services, visit the Kenyatta National Hospital website or call the main line.
